The Kanati System

Life is full of decisions and when deciding what garments to include in our first system we had to make some choices. One of the choices we had to make was around what garments to include in the Kanati system. Our goal with this system is to allow the greatest number of hunters the opportunity to be in the field for as much of the hunting season as possible. With that goal in mind, we decided on building a very specific set of products.

The system is mid-weight making it flexible and useable from early-season through the late season in most southern states. We’ve included all the essential elements (hat, shirt, pants, and jacket), we also include a very versatile neck gaiter with the system. Our experience over two years of testing is that the system is excellent in warm conditions, wicks moisture very well, and keeps you comfortable even with conditions at or near freezing.

In time we plan on introducing other garments that provide additional features, more comfort in varying conditions, and flexibility in use.

Fabrics to minimize noise and control moisture

Out Scouting for Deer

If you’ve ever walked into an Academy, Bass Pro, or Cabela’s you know that there are hundreds of different fabrics being used in today’s garments.  Most garments today use synthetic fabrics like polyester and a few use natural fibers like wool. While all have their benefits and weaknesses we’ll discuss the choices we’ve made.

Kanati Fleece Lined Jacket

When designing for hunters one requirement bubbled to the top and that was the need to have a product that was quiet in the field.  Garments that minimized noise ranked above other features like moisture wicking, odor control, or even the camo print itself. It was kind of a surprise because with all the technical fabrics on the market that claim to do everything except make you invisible you would think that some other feature would have been a top priority.  But when you think about how hunters move in the woods it makes sense. By showering, moving carefully, playing the wind most deer hunters (Western Style backpack hunting is a bit different) can control things like odor and moisture. But there’s nothing more irritating than pulling back on a deer only to have a garment make all kinds of noise and give away your location.

Because of the feedback, our Kanati Jacket is made of brushed polyester fabric and lined in fleece that minimizes sound when in the stand. The synthetic nature of the fabric allows for other features like moisture wicking and because it’s an outer layer at some point moisture will come into play. When moisture is at play synthetic material will retain its insulation properties and keep you reasonably warm even when wet.

The Kanati Long Sleeve Shirt which sits against the skin is designed to wick moisture from the skin and either send it to the surface of the fabric to eventually evaporate or pull it into an outer layer where it will eventually evaporate.

Noble Savage Raptor

Noble Savage Raptor

Camouflage is always a hot topic in hunting circles.  The earliest hunting specific camouflage designs were and are still in most cases based off of sticks an leaves.  In recent years much research has been done around the science of deer eyesight.  As a result, we have a much better understanding of how deer (and presumably other ungulates like elk, mule deer, etc..) perceive the world and can, therefore, design camouflage systems around science and data.

When designing the Noble Savage Camo pattern we needed something that would be effective hunting whitetail from a tree stand in East Texas as well as spotting and stalking mule deer in Wyoming.  We studied research around macro and micro patterns to create a multiscale design that breaks up the human silhouette from long and short distances. This prevents hunters from looking like a big unnatural blob on the landscape or in the stand.

As the name implies Noble Savage Raptor was inspired by raptors, or as their better-known birds of prey. If you look at raptors you’ll almost always find a mixture of dark and light tones.  This is a common characteristic of predatory animals and has been developed over millions of years of evolution. Until now the strategy hasn’t transferred over into popular hunting culture but we believe the science fully supports the ideas behind Noble Savage Raptor.
